When Oliver made his announcement, Madeline felt her heart skip a beat.
Oh, kiddo, I could go hungry, that’s no big deal, but you shouldn’t but heads with Julian?
Julian glanced at him, calm as ever. “She doesn’t even care about you, and you’re still taking her side? You really are a little traitor.”
“Mommy’s the best.”
“You’ve spent one day with her and she’s suddenly the best? What, did she give you some kind of magic potion?”
“Mommy’s just the best,” Oliver argued, refusing to back down.
Julian let out a short laugh and picked up his fork. “Go get her yourself, don’t expect me to call her.”
That was all Oliver needed. He dropped his attitude, hopped down from his chair, and hurried over to Madeline. He grabbed her hand and tried to pull her toward the dining room.
Madeline gritted her teeth, locking eyes with him. Her look said, You made this decision without me? Nice try. We’ll talk later.
But out loud she just said, “Noah, you should eat. Don’t worry about me.”
Of course Oliver could tell she was upset about his little stunt.
But with Julian in the room, she wouldn’t dare lose her temper. He figured he was safe for now.
He pushed his luck, putting on a dramatic pout. “Mommy, you know, cheering up everyone is exhausting.”
Madeline stared at him, unimpressed.
Fine. She’d deal with him later.
Oliver put on his most pitiful face, like he’d rather starve with her than eat alone. Madeline caved, softening her expression and letting him lead her to the table.
He immediately slid his own plate in front of her, his eyes shining with hope. “Mommy, here.”
Julian watched the whole scene, feeling a strange jealousy inside. He’d raised this kid for five years, but just one day with Madeline and Oliver was already attached.
Suddenly, his own dinner didn’t taste so great.
Watching the two of them pass a single bowl of soup back and forth, Julian rubbed his forehead. “What, is this the only bowl of soup in the Grayson house?”
