Oliver let out a giggle. “Come on, Mom, don’t be mad. I swear I won’t do it again.”
“You always say that. Next time, next time. You never talk to me about anything. Who’s the parent here, you or me?”
“I really mean it this time. No more next times. Please, Your Majesty, have mercy.”
“Fine. We’ll deal with this when we get home. For now, I’ll figure out a way to get you out of here.”
Julian came back from his call, and Madeline immediately sat up straight, acting like nothing had happened. Oliver was even better at it, eating calmly without a hint of guilt.
Julian looked at both of them, but he didn’t say a thing. He just kept eating, like everything was completely normal.
Dinner went on with this weird sense of peace hanging in the air.
Then the maid wheeled Helene into the room. Back at the hospital, Helene had noticed how quickly Julian left, and she knew something had gone down. Now, walking in, she saw Noah was back.
Didn’t Madeline send him away?
Why was he here again?
She knew it. That bitch was definitely trying to use the kid to worm her way back into Julian’s life.
Helene stared at them. They looked like one big happy family, and the sight made her want to scream. Madeline had to go. She couldn’t wait any longer, or she’d lose her place in this house.
“Noah, you’re back too,” Helene said, as the maid pushed her closer. She put on a perfect mask of surprise. Then she turned to Madeline. “Ms. Monroe, you’re here as well. I owe you an apology.”
She put on her sweetest voice. “Today was my fault. I shouldn’t have butted into your financial stuff, and I said some things I regret. I’m really sorry.”
Madeline didn’t buy it for a second. This was just Helene pretending to back down, nothing more.
Not interested in dragging it out, Madeline just said, “It’s fine.”
“Does that mean you forgive me, Ms. Monroe? That’s such a relief.” Helene flashed a beaming smile, eyes shining as she looked at Julian.
