Oliver puffed out his cheeks. Why did he say that too? Mommy was always telling him the same thing.
But he was already five. He wasn’t little anymore.
“So, where’s my real dad?” Oliver leaned in closer to Julian, his eyes bright with curiosity.
Julian shot him a look, a little annoyed. “Why are you asking about that?”
“I just want to know. Do you think my real dad knows I exist?”
“If he did, what would he do? Should I go live with him instead?”
Julian’s frown deepened. He was definitely not happy. “Who said you could ever go back to that jerk?”
“Jerk? Daddy, is my real dad a jerk?”
Julian looked at him seriously. “He is.”
Oliver almost burst out laughing. He scrambled up on the chair, grinning, and stared Julian down. “Why do you say that?”
Because he’s shameless. He took advantage of someone who was drugged. Madeline got set up, but that guy was fine. He acted without a shred of decency.
Of course, Julian wasn’t about to explain all that to a kid. He just lowered his voice and said, “Because he has no shame.”
Oliver cracked up. “So he’s a bad guy, the biggest bad guy in the world, and he’s dumb too, right?”
It probably wasn’t the best way to teach a kid, but honestly, it was the truth. Julian just raised an eyebrow. “Exactly.”
Hearing his rival get dragged like that put Julian in an unexpectedly good mood.
Oliver laughed even harder. If Julian weren’t there, he probably would have jumped on the bed and rolled around.
How could someone talk trash about themselves and feel this happy?
“Okay, Daddy, I got it.” Oliver was satisfied. His mood was way better now.
But then Julian seemed to notice something. His face got serious. “Noah.”
“Huh?”
Julian’s tone was suddenly strict, and Oliver’s smile faded. “What’s wrong?”
“When did you start asking so many questions?” Julian sounded suspicious now.
