Madeline glanced at the dining table, noticing the two sets of plates and utensils. She couldn't exactly say someone else had just been here and ran off the moment they heard Julian was coming. Not that it mattered to her what he thought, anyway. She just gave a simple nod. “Yeah.”
Julian let out a cold laugh, his lips tugging into a frosty smile. “Well, I guess I interrupted your evening. Noah, let’s go.” He moved to take the little boy with him.
But Oliver clung to Madeline’s leg, his face set in stubborn refusal. He’d just gotten back; there was no way he was leaving now.
Julian shot a look at the little guy glued to Madeline’s leg and muttered, “Are you serious?”
Julian was about to leave with Oliver, so Madeline jumped in. “It’s fine. Since you’re already here, why don’t you both stay and eat? I can have dinner with her another time.” Anyway, her guest was already scared off, and there was so much food, it’d be a shame to let it go to waste.
Julian agreed right away. “Alright.”
He sounded a little too ready, and Madeline couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d been waiting for her to say that.
She turned to Oliver. “Noah, can we take care of your bandage after dinner?”
Oliver nodded eagerly. Of course. He was starving.
Julian’s eyes swept over the table loaded with food. He glanced at Madeline. “Did you make all this?”
“The housekeeper did,” Madeline replied without hesitation.
Right then, Marian poked her head out of the kitchen, having overheard. “Ms. Monroe is just being modest. I only helped wash the veggies. She made everything herself. Sir, you should give it a try. Ms. Monroe’s cooking is really something.”
Oliver reached over and put a piece of fish on Julian’s plate. “Mommy’s food is the best.”
“How would you know?” Julian’s gaze landed on Oliver, a hint of curiosity in his eyes.
Madeline’s hand paused in midair.
Julian looked between the two of them, suspicion flickering in his eyes. “You seem to know her pretty well.”
