Madeline hesitated, her lips twitching with uncertainty. “So… you’re staying here tonight too?” she asked, testing the waters. She was pretty sure Julian hadn’t meant he wanted to spend the night, but after the way he brought it up, she felt awkward not at least offering.

Julian just nodded. “Yeah.”

Yeah? Seriously? What was with this guy? He just agreed like it was nothing.

Madeline felt an instant headache. “I only have two bedrooms. Marian has one, and I have the other. Noah can just sleep with me,” she explained, hoping he’d get the hint. No guest room, buddy. Time to head home.

Julian didn’t seem to care. “The sofa’s fine.”

“It’s too small. You won’t be comfortable.”

“Comfort’s not as important as staying safe.”

Madeline was speechless. At this point, what could she even say?

In the end, both Julian and Oliver stayed the night.

After everyone got ready for bed, Madeline took Oliver into her room. With Julian out of the way, Oliver wasted no time snuggling up to her, wrapping his arms around her neck.

“Mommy, I missed you so much,” he whispered.

Madeline pressed a finger to her lips, reminding him to stay quiet. She tucked him in, then lay down beside him. “Let’s call Noah, okay?”

“Yeah, let’s call him!”

Madeline dialed Noah on video chat. When his face appeared on the screen, he looked happy to see them, but Madeline could tell there was a little sadness in his eyes. Oliver didn’t notice, too busy chattering away, but Madeline caught it right away.

“Noah, Mommy will bring you home in a few days. I promise.”

“Really?” Noah’s eyes immediately brightened.

She nodded. “Really.”

She wanted both her boys close by. Now that Julian didn’t seem suspicious about Oliver, nothing should stop her from bringing Noah back too.

The boys were over the moon. The three of them talked and laughed for ages before finally saying goodnight. Not long after, Oliver drifted off, sleeping soundly next to her.
