Brenda rested her chin in her hand, eyes sparkling as she smiled at Madeline. “James.”
Madeline’s eyebrows barely moved, but she looked down and replied with a quiet, “Oh.”
Brenda watched her, clearly entertained. “So, Madeline, what do you think?”
Madeline kept her cool, focusing on the files in front of her.
“He’s definitely an option. But he won Best Actor years ago, and he’s amazing at both singing and acting. His endorsement fee is probably even higher than Tansy’s. If we want him, you’ll need to check with PR about his schedule.”
“Alright, let’s go with him. You’re in charge of the meeting this time.”
Madeline glanced up. “Why me?”
Brenda scooted closer, winking playfully. “Because you two have a history. Who else could do it?”
“What history? We haven’t talked in eight years.”
“Exactly. He moved abroad right after you got married. Then when he came back, you’d already left the country. Now you’re finally back, and he’s gone again.”
Brenda folded her arms and leaned back, grinning as she let out a dramatic sigh. “The timing is just never right for you two. Remember how he basically skipped class just to chase after you for three years in college? Be honest, did you two ever actually date? Or did you dump him before it even started?”
Brenda was practically lying across the desk with curiosity, staring at Madeline like she was waiting for the juiciest secret.
Madeline took a slow breath. “Brenda, do you really have so little to do that you’re digging up gossip from eight years ago?”
“You know me, I live for this stuff. You two were legends. Everyone at my school knew about you. Come on, Madeline, spill.”
“You really want to know?”
Brenda nodded like her life depended on it.
Seeing Brenda’s eager face, Madeline gave in. “We dated.”
“Who dumped who?”
“I dumped him.”
“How long did it last?”
“An hour.”
