Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 18

After Brenda finished speaking, Madeline went quiet. She knew Brenda was right. She couldn't spend her whole life running from Julian. Even if she moved to another country, what would happen if Julian found her again? Would she just keep moving, city after city, never settling down? If Julian refused to let her go, was she supposed to run forever?

That was impossible. Besides, she had never done anything wrong. The only reason she stayed away from Julian was for her child. He had already taken one of her children from her. She couldn't let him hurt Oliver too.

Brenda let out a sigh and went on, “And you asked me to check in on Grandma Monroe. She hasn’t been feeling well lately and keeps asking about you. Madeline, I really think you should come home.”

Thinking about her grandmother, Madeline felt a wave of guilt she couldn't shake. She hesitated for a long moment.

“Madeline, are you still there?”

“I’m coming back,” Madeline replied, her voice steady and sure.

Brenda sounded relieved. “That’s great news. What about Oliver, though? What are you planning to do?”

Madeline knelt down so she was eye-level with her son. She knew Julian was probably searching everywhere for her. There was no way she could bring Oliver with her. She couldn’t risk it.

“I’ll make arrangements for Oliver.”

“Okay. Call me when you land at the airport in the capital. I’ll come get you.”

“Alright.”

Oliver tugged at her sleeve. “Mommy, does that mean we don’t have to leave anymore?”

Madeline’s eyes softened as she looked at him. She pressed her lips together, then spoke gently. “Oliver, I need to talk to you. Mommy has to go back to the capital, but you’ll need to stay with Uncle Casey for a little while. It’s not safe for you to be with me right now, and I can’t let anything happen to you.”

Oliver could tell how worried his mom was. He trusted that everything she did was for his sake, so he nodded without a fuss. “Okay, Mommy. Don’t worry, I’ll be good.”

Hearing that, Madeline felt her eyes sting with tears she refused to let fall. “You’re the best, Oliver. As soon as things calm down, I’ll come get you, I promise.”

“Okay. I’ll listen to you,” Oliver said, his voice soft but strong.

Madeline hugged him tight. She didn’t let herself linger, just brought Oliver to Casey’s place, then headed straight to the airport, her suitcase in hand, barely half an hour later.

Meanwhile, on Julian’s side, Miles had already tracked Madeline down.
