"Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve just landed at Capital International Airport. Thanks for flying with us. We hope to see you again soon."
The flight attendant’s voice drifted through the cabin, calm and practiced. Madeline blinked awake, folded up her blanket, and glanced out the window. Five years. And here she was, back again.
She exited the terminal with a quiet confidence. Her deep brown trench coat fit her perfectly, her long hair spilling down her back, and her heels clicked softly against the floor. With one hand on her suitcase and the other tucked in her pocket, she moved with purpose, drawing curious glances from the crowd.
Brenda had been waiting for her. She slipped off her sunglasses, a bright smile lighting up her red lips. When their eyes met, Brenda pulled Madeline into a huge hug. "Madeline, you’re finally back."
"Did you miss me?"
"Of course I did. I just wish Oliver could have come too. I miss that little guy so much."
Madeline’s eyes dimmed for a moment. "Once things are settled here, we’ll bring him over."
"Alright. I’ve already set up your new place. Want to check out Scent Trace first?"
Scent Trace was the perfume company her mother left her before she disappeared. Brenda had been running it for her all these years.
Madeline shook her head. "We’ve got time. Let’s grab some food first."
"You’re not even a little curious about how Scent Trace is doing? Isn’t the big boss supposed to check in?"
Madeline smiled. "I trust you. That’s enough for me."
Brenda slid her arm through Madeline’s and grinned. "Honestly, it’s your talent, not mine. Every perfume you’ve launched lately has turned into a bestseller. Now all these big companies want to work with us, and everyone’s desperate to know who Scent Trace’s mysterious perfumer is. Don’t you think it’s time for you to show your face?"
She watched Madeline, waiting for an answer.
