“What do you mea?” Madeline’s eyebrows knit together as she stared at Julian’s stormy face.
“It better not have been you.” Without another word, Julian turned and walked out, his expression icy.
Madeline glanced at the clock on the wall. Oliver should be at school by now. She had zero intention of sticking around. Heading downstairs, she made for the door, but a Grayson family bodyguard stepped in front of her, blocking the way.
“Why are you stopping me?”
“Sorry, Ms. Monroe. Mr. Grayson said you’re not allowed to leave until he comes back.” The bodyguard’s voice was flat, all business.
“Why? On what grounds?” Madeline’s anger spiked, her voice sharp.
“Those are his orders. He says you stay, you stay.” Same old stubborn attitude.
Madeline knew these bodyguards only answered to Julian. If he said she couldn’t leave, they’d probably tie her to a chair to make sure she stayed put.
She let out a slow breath. This wasn’t about waiting for Julian to come back just to say goodbye. He wanted to investigate what happened to Helene and wouldn’t let her go until he was sure Madeline had nothing to do with it.
He still didn’t trust her. Deep down, he still thought she might be guilty.
Madeline rubbed her forehead and wandered back to the living room. She hadn’t done anything, so he could check all he wanted. He wouldn’t find a single thing, and she wasn’t scared of his suspicions.
Still… who would want to kidnap Helene?
Maybe one of Helene’s own enemies.
Madeline pressed her fingers to her temples, trying to remember what happened last night. She didn’t even have her phone now. There was nothing she could do. She’d even asked the PR department to set up a ten o’clock meeting with Tansy. At this rate, she was definitely going to miss it.
She sank into the sofa and waited. Two hours crawled by. Then, sudden footsteps pounded in from the foyer. Madeline looked up just in time to see Julian rushing inside, Helene limp and battered in his arms.
Madeline shot to her feet. Julian’s whole presence screamed “don’t come near me” as he carried Helene upstairs, a crowd of family doctors hustling after him.
