Madeline reached up and gently brushed her cheek. “I hit her back already. Let’s just get out of here.”
…
Outside the Grayson estate.
As soon as Helene and her parents got into the car, their faces shifted from polite to furious. Courtney clenched her teeth. “Unbelievable. Julian’s actually defending that bitch Madeline. Seriously, what is he thinking? Has she brainwashed him or something? And that guy in black, who even is he? Strutting around like he owns the place.”
Bill stayed stone-faced, his voice low. “We really don’t want to cross that man.”
Courtney’s frown deepened. “So who is he?”
“Someone we’re better off avoiding.”
Helene suddenly remembered the night she went to Madeline’s apartment and was stopped by that same man for no reason. He was protecting Madeline then too. And now, here he was, doing it again.
Helene’s mood darkened as she gingerly touched her side where she was still sore. It made no sense. How did Madeline get someone so powerful on her side?
Courtney pressed her lips together. “I’m telling Christian about this. If Julian’s going to act this way, Helene will suffer so much once she marries him.”
Bill let out an irritated sigh. “Enough about Christian. He’s overseas. All he can do is make a call or two, but what does that really change? The important thing is for Helene to win Julian’s heart herself.”
Bill wasn’t usually the type to meddle in their relationship drama, but after tonight, it was clear things were a mess between his daughter and Julian.
Julian didn’t even see his own daughter as being on the same level as Madeline.
Courtney glanced at Helene, her worry obvious. “Helene, talk to me. What’s really going on between you and Julian? I thought he cared about you the most. Why’s he standing up for Madeline like that?”
