Madeline’s eyes landed on Raine. “And what, should I butter her up and be her bestfriend like you do?”

Raine opened her mouth to snap back, but Helene cut her off. “That’s enough, Raine. Let’s go.”

They weren’t here to argue with Madeline. This meeting was about business. They were here to see the owner of Scent Trace.

Before leaving, Raine gave Madeline a once-over, her gaze dripping with sarcasm. “You really think wearing a pricey suit makes you a boss? Who are you trying to impress?”

Madeline blinked, slow and unbothered. What a coincidence. She actually was the boss.

A cold, knowing smile tugged at her lips just as her phone started ringing. She stepped aside to answer. “Yeah... don’t worry, it’s fine. Take your time and drive safe.”

She hung up and checked the time. The project manager who was supposed to handle this meeting was stuck in traffic. After checking the time, she headed for the elevator.

Meanwhile, Raine supported Helene as they walked to the private room they’d reserved. A few people from the partner company were already inside, waiting. They’d been told Helene and Raine would show up, so they just exchanged a few polite greetings as the two entered.

The room had an old-school elegance, with a decorative screen set off to one side. Raine led Helene behind it, where they waited for Scent Trace’s mysterious owner to arrive.

Raine frowned. “Helene, do you really think she’ll show up? She never goes to events, always hiding. Honestly, I bet she looks awful, or why else would she avoid everyone?”

Helene smirked, her tone icy. “Who cares if she’s ugly? As long as we find out who she is and dig up her secrets, my dad could crush her little company without even trying.”
