For a moment, her gaze lingered on the folding screen in the corner, almost as if she could see straight through it. Then she looked away, her expression as steady as ever, a faint chill in her eyes.

“Sorry I’m late, everyone. Traffic was a mess.”

Suddenly, the screen crashed to the floor. Whoever had been hiding behind it must have been startled out of their minds.

“Madeline!” Helene’s voice cracked through the air, sharp and incredulous.

Madeline looked over at the toppled screen, raising an eyebrow. Was she really such a threat to their peace of mind? She met their eyes, her own gaze cool and unwavering, her voice like ice. “So, what were you two doing back there?”

Helene looked completely thrown off. She started toward Madeline, but her limp made her look awkward, almost silly. Madeline’s eyes glimmered with a trace of amusement.

Helene narrowed her eyes. “You’re telling me you own Scent Trace?”

Madeline just arched an eyebrow, staying silent. That was all the answer they needed.

“Impossible!” Raine burst out, rushing forward. “You are lying! Madeline, who do you think you’re fooling? I know exactly what you are, and you’re no boss. That’s just ridiculous.”

Madeline’s expression cooled even more.

“Helene, there’s no way she owns Scent Trace. She’s been overseas all this time. How could she possibly run a company here?” Raine said, her voice rising.
