Madeline’s brows knit together right away. “Where are you now?” she asked, her voice tight with worry.
“I just dropped Noah off at your place. We’d barely made it inside when they showed up. Marian didn’t know who they were, so she opened the door without thinking. Now everyone’s stuck in this weird standoff by the entrance.”
Madeline clutched her phone, her frustration clear. “They really won’t give up, will they?”
“No, I don’t think this is about the company anymore. They haven’t even mentioned it. They just keep insisting on getting inside, like they’re searching for something. I’ve got Noah with me in your room. We’re not coming out.”
Hearing Noah’s name, Madeline instantly got more cautious. She didn’t want Julian overhearing, especially since the car was so quiet. Luckily, Brenda was keeping her voice low.
Madeline forced herself to take a deep breath. Last night, Noah had made a noise and Drew almost caught on. Now they were here, probably trying to find out if she really had a child.
There was no point saying more on the phone. “Okay, I’m coming back right now,” Madeline said, then hung up.
She turned to Julian, anxiety all over her face. “Can you drive faster, please? I really need to get home.”
Julian could hear the urgency in her tone and stepped on the gas.
...
At Madeline’s apartment, Marian stood guard at the door, broom in hand, looking like she could take on an army by herself. “I’m warning you one last time. If you don’t leave, I’m calling the police.”
Drew’s expression soured at her defiance. “I told you, I’m Madeline’s father. This is my daughter’s home. You’re just the housekeeper. Who are you to block me? Move.”
Marian stood firm, waving the broom. “Ms. Monroe doesn’t want you inside. If I let you in, I’ll lose my job. As long as I’m here, you’re not getting through.”
Drew’s patience snapped. “Are you even listening? We’re her family. Why would she keep us out?” Raine shoved Marian, trying to force her way inside.
To Raine, Madeline’s desperation to keep them out was proof something was up. She was sure Madeline had a kid hidden inside, and she was determined to find out.
Raine’s lips curled into a smug smile at the thought. That’s when Marian swung the broom, smacking Raine across the face. Raine let out a yelp and stumbled back, hand flying to her cheek as she stared in shock.
A stupid cleaning lady had actually hit her.
“Disgusting!” Raine spat out some dust and wiped her mouth, glaring. “How dare you touch me? You’re just the help.”
