“Well…”
“Get out.”
Helene’s face hardened, but she didn’t move, making it clear she had no intention of leaving.
Madeline turned to Brenda. “Brenda, call the police.”
“Okay.” Brenda instantly pulled out her phone and started dialing.
Raine lunged forward, knocking the phone out of Brenda’s hand. “Why are you calling the police? You just want to distract us. Madeline, stop pretending. Let us in.”
Madeline’s eyes narrowed, cold and steady. She walked right up to Raine, using every inch of her height to look down on her. Raine shrank back a little under Madeline’s icy stare. “What are you trying to—ah!”
Madeline slapped her, hard, right across the face.
Drew shouted, “Madeline! What the hell are you doing?”
Raine just stood there, stunned. Her cheek burned with pain and she was too shocked to react.
When she finally snapped out of it, she covered her face, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Madeline, how could you hit me?”
Madeline’s voice was flat. “What gives you the right to barge into my house? Is it because you’re so shameless?”
Raine glared at her, gritting her teeth. Madeline shook out her hand, wincing a little. “Yeah, you must be.”
Raine just stood there, clutching her face, furious.
Madeline looked at the group, a cold little smile on her lips. “This is funny. Even if I did have a kid, so what? Since when is that a crime? Am I going to get executed for it?”
Raine opened her mouth but nothing came out.
Madeline’s voice was sharp as ice. “Well? Am I?”
No one answered.
