Helene slipped her arm through Julian’s, holding on gently. Julian barely seemed to notice. His eyes were locked onto Madeline, her face cool and unreadable, like she’d put on some kind of shield.
“Julian?” Helene called him quietly, almost afraid to interrupt.
That finally got his attention. He pulled his gaze away from Madeline, turning just in time to spot a children’s book left out on the table. His expression darkened for a split second, but he quickly looked away, not letting anything show.
Madeline watched him the whole time. She saw it. She knew he’d noticed.
Just as Julian was about to leave, Madeline called out, “Wait.”
She grabbed the book and walked over, holding it out to him. “Noah left this here last time. You should take it.”
Julian looked down at her, then took the notebook from her hands. He flipped it open casually, but the handwriting inside was unmistakable. It was Noah’s. Julian had made sure Noah had the best tutors. The writing was steady, neat, just as he expected.
His tense brow eased, just a little. Some of the storm faded from his eyes, but there was still a hint of doubt.
“Alright,” he said quietly, and then he strode out of the apartment.
Helene paused on her way out and shot Madeline a cold, lingering look.
You might have dodged it this time. But you won’t be so lucky again. I’m watching you, Madeline. Just wait.
She turned and hurried after Julian.
Once they were gone, the air in the apartment felt lighter, almost like everyone could finally breathe again. Madeline let out a shaky breath, but worry still clung to her heart.
Julian was suspicious now. Helene would probably have people watching the apartment from now on. Things were definitely about to get a lot more complicated.
“Madeline, are you okay?” Brenda rushed over to steady her.
Marian quietly went to shut the door.
