She’d already said it so many times, and it never made a difference. He never believed her. The trust between them barely existed.

Madeline raised her hands, trying to push Julian away, but before she could do anything, footsteps echoed from her bedroom. In the quiet apartment, the sound was almost painfully clear.

Someone was in her room.

Julian’s face darkened, turning downright stormy. Who was it? Her boyfriend? He shot her a glare. “Madeline, you’re unbelievable.” He stood up, clearly ready to storm into her bedroom and see for himself.

He wanted to know exactly who it was.

Madeline caught his intention right away and quickly grabbed his arm. Brenda’s pajamas were practically see-through, and she was terrified of Julian. Just last night, Brenda had joked that if she saw him again, she’d probably faint.

Madeline didn’t even want to picture that.

“Don’t go in there.”

Julian’s voice was sharp and cold. “What, scared to let me see?”

From inside the room, Brenda’s sleepy voice called out, “Madeline? Where’d you go in the middle of the night?” She sounded groggy, mumbling as she wandered around looking for her.

Julian paused, his expression easing just a little when he realized it was a girl’s voice.

Brenda’s footsteps came closer to the door.

Madeline’s heart pounded in her chest. Suddenly, Julian scooped her up, carrying her straight into the nearest bathroom. The door clicked shut just as Brenda came out, rubbing her eyes and yawning. “Madeline? Madeline?”

Brenda glanced into the en-suite bathroom, then checked the living room. No sign of Madeline. She started to look genuinely worried.

Where could Madeline be in the middle of the night if she wasn’t in her bedroom, the living room, or the bathroom?
