Brenda had noticed something off in Madeline’s voice earlier. Now, seeing the kiss marks on Madeline’s neck, everything suddenly made sense.
“What did that jerk do to you?”
Madeline shook her head, and a single tear slipped down her cheek. “It’s nothing…”
Brenda saw how upset she was and gently pulled her into a hug. “Hey, don’t cry. It’s okay. You’re safe now.”
Madeline closed her eyes. She didn’t want to talk, and Brenda didn’t push her.
…
Over the next few days, Madeline didn’t see Julian at all. Oliver told her Julian was away on business and wouldn’t be home.
Madeline barely reacted to the news. Oliver, however, seemed tired of staying at the Grayson house and insisted that Madeline come pick him up.
She missed her son, so she agreed right away.
After work, Madeline picked up Noah first, then headed to Oliver’s school.
When she got there, Oliver was already waiting outside the front gate. He had his backpack slung over his shoulders, one hand stuffed in his pocket, the other holding a bag of snacks he was munching on.
A little boy walked by and shot Oliver a look, then snorted. “Even my pet eats better than that.”
Oliver just grinned at him. “Well, even if you say that, I’m not sharing with you.”
The other boy blinked, taking a second to process what Oliver had said. Then he snapped, “Noah!”
“Shh. It’s not polite to yell in public.”
The boy’s face went bright red, but Oliver ignored him. He started looking around for Madeline’s car. As soon as he spotted it, his eyes lit up, and he took off running.
His soft hair flew everywhere as he ran. “Mommy!”
