Julian seemed to notice something. He lifted his dark, unreadable eyes and glanced over at Madeline. She froze, instinctively turning to walk away. But then she realized how awkward that must look, so she stopped abruptly, her feet glued to the spot.
Miles and Oliver stood by, watching the whole scene, totally confused by her strange behavior. Madeline could feel Julian’s icy stare on her, and it sent a chill right through her. His eyes were so deep and cold, it was almost suffocating.
Was she really coming over to talk to him? Julian’s lips curled in a silent, bitter smile. She took the first step, but it didn’t mean he’d actually talk to her. He straightened the collar of his crisp, expensive suit without even thinking about it.
Madeline hesitated for what felt like forever, her nails digging into her palms until it almost hurt. The memory of that night kept crashing over her, making it impossible to face Julian like nothing had happened. And the way he looked at her—like he couldn’t stand the sight of her—made her want to run.
He probably didn’t want to see her either.
Madeline shook her head, trying to clear out the mess of thoughts. She crouched down in front of Oliver, gently ruffling his hair. “Sweetheart, go cheer up your dad, okay? I’ve got to head home for some things.”
“Mom…”
But she was already turning away, practically bolting without a second thought.
Julian’s eyes followed her as she left, his brows drawing together. His expression turned cold, almost instantly.
She left. Again!
He pressed his fingers to his brow, lips drawn tight. What was he even expecting? For her to suddenly grow a conscience and come talk to him for once?
Admitting that to himself just made his expression twist even more, anger and frustration he couldn’t hide.
When Miles opened the car door for Oliver, the tension inside was so thick it was almost scary. Miles shivered, wondering why the boss seemed even angrier than before.
Oliver, eyes wide and innocent, scooted up next to Julian and blinked up at him. “Daddy, what’s going on?”
Julian said nothing.
“Are you upset?”
Still nothing.
