“Really, really. If I’m lying, I’ll grow a big nose,” Oliver said, his face lit up with the most earnest smile.

Julian looked at the little guy’s animated expression, a small smile tugging at his lips. “If you’re lying, you’ll grow a big nose?”

“No way,” Oliver shook his head. He wasn’t gonna like a big nose.

Julian gave him a sidelong look. “You’re full of clever tricks.”

If Madeline really talked so much, she wouldn’t be Madeline he knew anymore.

“Daddy, are you happy now?” Oliver pressed, looking hopeful.

Julian’s smile faded and he put on a straight face. “No.”

Oliver puffed up his cheeks, frustrated. This was so hard. Why was his grumpy dad so hard to cheer up?

“Fine, stay mad then.”

Julian just stared at him, speechless. Miles didn’t know what to say either.

Even though Julian had said he wasn’t happy, his expression totally gave him away. He wasn’t mad at all. If anything, Miles thought the car felt lighter, like a fresh breeze had swept through. Who would’ve guessed Mr. Grayson was this easy to coax? All it took was a single word from Ms. Monroe.

When they got home to the Grayson family estate, Oliver followed Julian inside, trailing along like a little shadow. He was just about to toss his backpack onto the sofa when he realized someone was already sitting there.

Lucy sat primly on the couch, a cup of floral tea in her hand. Her head was wrapped in gauze and the cast on her arm hadn’t come off yet, but none of it took away from her elegant presence. She glanced at Oliver, her eyes full of the usual disapproval.

Without thinking, Oliver blurted, “Old witch?”

Lucy’s face darkened. “What did you just call me?”

Oliver quickly slapped a hand over his mouth and shot a nervous look at Julian.

Lucy was fuming. “Julian, did you hear that? Sometimes this boy really needs to be taught a lesson.”

Oliver quietly stuck his tongue out when Lucy wasn’t looking.

Julian glanced at Lucy, his tone calm. “Why did you come back?”
