Madeline still wasn’t picking up. Oliver was so anxious he couldn’t sit still, pacing back and forth in the hallway. “What do I do? What should I do?” He couldn't just wait around for something to happen.

He grabbed his phone and called Noah. The line barely rang before Noah answered. “Oliver, what’s wrong?”

“Are you and Mom at home right now?”

“I’m at home, but Mom went to the Monroe family’s place for dinner.”

So, it was true. They’d managed to trick Mom away from the house. And Oliver remembered that awful woman saying something about a hotel, which made him even more worried.

“You need to ask Aunt Marian to come get you and leave—” He stopped, thinking it through. That woman had people watching them last time. She might do the same thing again. If they tried to leave and got caught, things could get even worse.

“What is it, Oliver?” Noah’s voice was tight with worry.

“Just listen to me, okay?” Oliver quickly explained everything he’d overheard, then shared his idea. They worked out a plan together.

“Will this really work?” Noah asked.

“We don’t have any better options,” Oliver said. “It’s the only way.”

“Alright, I get it. Be careful when you leave by yourself.”

“I will, don’t worry.”

Once he hung up, Oliver hurried back to his room, stripped off his clothes, and crawled into bed. When the maid came in to call him for dinner, he yawned and mumbled, “I’m really tired. I’d like to eat later. Could you tell Dad for me?”

The maid looked concerned and stepped closer. “Are you feeling alright?”

“I’m fine. I just want to sleep.”

She didn’t seem convinced, but nodded and left to tell Julian.

When Julian heard the news, he frowned and headed upstairs. As soon as he walked in, Oliver squeezed his eyes shut. Julian turned on the light and sat by the bed, worry etched across his sharp features. He reached out and touched Oliver’s forehead. At least it wasn’t hot. No fever.

Oliver slowly opened his eyes and saw Julian’s worried face. “Dad?”
