Helene tipped her head back and swallowed the wine, her movements desperate and shaky. Julian's expression shifted, but he just watched, silent.
“Helene, that’s enough,” Lucy said, her voice laced with worry. But Helene barely seemed to hear. She poured herself another glass, filling it to the top, her hands trembling. Tears shimmered in her eyes as she looked at them, her voice unsteady. “Mrs. Grayson, let me finish. Please, just let me say this.”
She focused on Julian, her gaze pleading. “Julian, I know you’re angry. I’ve made so many mistakes. I even went behind Madeline’s back, but it was only because I love you. I was so scared of losing you.”
Her voice cracked. “I’m so sorry. I’ll fix it, I swear. Please, don’t call off our engagement...”
Lucy almost jumped out of her chair. “What do you mean, call off the engagement? Julian, what’s going on?”
Julian’s face turned cold. “Pleasestay out of it.”
“How can I stay out of it? Tell me the truth. Are you doing this because of Madeline?”
It was obvious from Helene’s words that Madeline was the real reason. But Helene shook her head. “No, Mrs. Grayson, it’s my fault. I haven’t been good enough. It has nothing to do with anyone else.”
She lifted her glass again. “Julian, let me drink this as an apology to Ms. Monroe.” Without waiting for a response, she forced the wine down, her whole body swaying.
Julian frowned, watching her struggle to stay on her feet. Finally, he reached out and caught her wrist. “That’s enough.”
His touch made her smile, just a little. Her hand trembled, sending the glass tumbling to the floor. She bit her lip, tears filling her eyes as she looked up at him. Her beauty was almost fragile, her eyes red, her lips trembling.
She clung to his hand. “Julian, do you forgive me? Can we not end things? I promise I’ll change.”
Julian didn’t answer, his brows still furrowed.
Lucy turned to him, her tone urgent. “Julian, Helene is trying her best here. Whatever happened, just let it go. You can’t keep threatening to end the engagement. The engagement party is next month. What will people say? Your grandfather won’t allow it either.”
