Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 229

Julian hesitated just a moment before the door swung open. Marian stepped out, a bag of trash in her hand. She froze when she saw the man waiting outside, then quickly tried to pull the door closed behind her.

Helene moved in, steadying the door with her hand. “Hi, is Ms. Monroe home?”

“She’s not here today. Are you looking for her?” Marian replied, her voice careful.

Helene offered a small, polite smile. “It’s nothing urgent. Are you here by yourself?”

Marian nodded. “Yes, I am.”

The words were barely out of her mouth when the sound of a cartoon floated from inside the apartment.

Helene’s lips pulled into a sly smile. “I thought you said you were alone. Didn’t expect you to be into cartoons, ma’am.”

Marian’s face turned anxious as she fumbled to push the door shut. “No, there’s no cartoon. You must be imagining things.”

Her panic just made Helene more confident. She pressed her hand firmly on the door. “Is that so? Maybe we heard wrong. When’s Ms. Monroe coming back? Maybe we’ll just wait for her inside.”

Without waiting for permission, Helene pushed past Marian and walked into the apartment. Marian looked nervous and a little lost, hands clenched tight, but she didn’t try to stop her.

Julian stayed by the doorway, not moving. His eyes were dark and narrowed, his expression impossible to read. The cartoon from inside only confirmed what he’d started to suspect. Something was definitely off.

Inside, Helene’s voice rang out, full of shock. “Wait… who are you?”

Julian’s fists tightened. He hesitated just a second, then walked inside.

He stopped when he saw a small boy sitting on the sofa, eyes glued to the TV. For a moment, Julian just stared, his usually cool face frozen.
