Julian’s suspicious look faded a little, and for just a moment, you could see the relief in his eyes. Whether or not this kid really was Noah, it was enough to prove Helene had lied about seeing Madeline with a toddler. Noah had practiced his lines with Oliver, even swapped clothes with him, but neither of them knew how much Julian actually believed.
“Daddy, why are you here at Mommy’s place?” Noah shot the question right back at him.
Julian’s expression tightened. “It’s nothing.”
He stood up, his whole energy shifting, eyes going cold as he fixed Helene with a glare sharp enough to cut glass. “Where’s this child you said you saw?”
Helene felt her whole body tense up. Julian’s icy stare made her skin prickle. The whole scene felt off, and she started to wonder if she’d been stupid to trust Raine in the first place. What child? They hadn’t found anything, not the last time, not the time before. This time, they’d shown up out of nowhere, and Madeline was way too busy trying to take care of herself to hide a kid.
So Madeline wasn’t hiding anything. Helene clenched her hands so tightly her nails dug into her palms. Her head felt like it might explode. This was all Raine’s fault. That idiot had set her up again.
She forced herself to calm down and managed a tight smile. “Maybe... I must have been mistaken.”
Julian’s mind was made up. He didn’t spare Helene another glance. Looking down at Noah, he asked, “Are you coming back with me or staying here?”
Noah remembered what Oliver told him to say. “Daddy, I want to see Mommy.”
Marian stepped in at just the right moment. “Sir, I was actually hoping you could help us. We can’t reach Ms. Monroe. Her phone just rings and rings. She said she was going to the Monroe family for dinner this afternoon, but she should have been back by now. I’m worried something might have happened.”
Noah glanced at Marian, then up at Julian. This was all part of the plan. If something had happened to Madeline, they wouldn’t be able to help her, but Julian could. By letting him figure out she was missing, they could get him to look for her and clear away any doubts at the same time. Two birds, one stone. That was what Oliver and Noah had planned from the start.
Julian frowned. “How long has she been gone?”
Marian checked the clock. “About four hours now. She said she’d come straight back after dinner, and that was ages ago. Her phone is on, but she’s not picking up. She never does this.”
