Madeline tensed, her brow furrowing as she struck out at the person in front of her. But he was way faster. Before she could even react, he dodged her attack, grabbed her wrist, and pressed her back against the wall.

Looking up, Madeline found herself face-to-face with someone unfairly handsome. He was wearing a black suit, the top buttons of his shirt undone, giving off this effortlessly cool, bad-boy vibe.

“Casey?” she breathed, relief flooding her chest.

He smirked, voice lazy and teasing as it reached her ears. “I keep telling you to practice more, but you’re lazier than a cat in the sun. You couldn’t even block one of my moves. If anyone asks, don’t say I’m your mentor.”

Madeline rolled her eyes. “Quit it. Let me go.” She felt awful. The scent in that room had been too strong. Even though she’d gotten out fast, a feverish heat was spreading through her body.

She braced herself against the wall and glared at him. “How did you even know I was here? And don’t tell me it was your intuition again.”

Casey’s grin widened. “It was my intuition.”

“Just admit you had someone tailing me,” Madeline said, waving a hand to fan her flushed face.

Casey shot her a look. “What’s wrong? Are you mad?”

“Why would I be mad? It’s not like I’m some ungrateful brat. You sent someone to keep an eye on me. I should be thanking you, not throwing a fit.”

Honestly, Madeline couldn’t care less about that right now.

She squinted at him. “So you’ve been here for a while?”

He nodded. “Yeah. Before they dragged you into that room.”

Madeline let out a dry laugh. “So you were just standing there, watching the whole time?”

Casey chuckled. “Sure was. I figured you could handle those idiots on your own. If you couldn’t, well, you’d only have yourself to blame.”

Cody, who was standing a few steps behind, nearly rolled his eyes out of his head. He’d seen his boss pacing, torn between letting Madeline fight her own battles and wanting to storm in to save her.

Seriously, boss, Cody thought, you really think you can win her over by talking like that? Good luck.
