Julian looked so grim that even Helene didn’t dare to say a word on the way in. Inside, though, her nerves were alive with excitement.
Madeline was finally getting what she deserved. Helene just knew that if Julian saw Madeline in bed with a bunch of men, there was no way he could ever look at her the same way again.
With her heart pounding, Helene kept close behind Julian as they went inside. Just as they entered the lobby, several police officers in uniform hurried in too. They flashed their badges at the hotel staff, and someone immediately led them down the hall toward the rooms.
Helene heard exactly which room the police were headed for. It was the one she’d set up for Madeline, and the charge was prostitution.
Helene’s excitement shot through the roof. She hadn’t expected Raine to be so clever, calling the police and making things even worse for Madeline. This would ruin her completely.
“Julian, Raine said Ms. Monroe went to room 406. Let’s go straight up,” Helene said, trying to sound casual.
Julian glanced at her with an uneasy look, and Helene could feel the tension building in the air.
At room 406, the police knocked. No one answered.
Helene could barely keep the smile off her face. She pretended to be clueless and leaned over to ask one of the hotel employees, “Excuse me, do you know what’s going on in there?”
The employee whispered, “I heard someone reported prostitution. The police are here because of that.”
“What?” Helene gasped, covering her mouth in fake shock. She turned to Julian, eyes wide. “Julian, Ms. Monroe is still inside…”
Julian didn’t wait for her to finish. He turned away, frowning, and started to leave.
Helene hurried after him, confused. “Julian, where are you going?”
“To find Madeline.”
“But isn’t Ms. Monroe in that room?” Helene grabbed his arm tightly.
