Julian reached out and undid the buttons on Madeline’s coat. She still had a shirt on underneath.
“You can check her now,” he said, straightening up.
“Alright, alright.” The doctor slipped on his stethoscope, but paused for a second when he glanced at Madeline’s partially opened shirt. He hesitated, then decided to go ahead.
The checkup started…
Just then, Julian’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and picked up.
“Julian, where are you? Come out—”
“I’m at the hospital. I’m busy.”
Before Brady could finish, Julian shut him down.
“The hospital?” The amusement in Brady’s voice disappeared. “Are you sick?”
“It’s not me.”
“Then who? Noah?”
“Madeline.”
“Huh? I thought you two were…” Giving each other the cold shoulder?
Before Brady could finish, someone grabbed the phone right out of his hand.
Josh clamped a hand over Brady’s mouth, grinning as he spoke into the phone. “Julian, is your wife okay? Which hospital are you at? Want us to come?”
“You two got nothing better to do?”
“Not really.”
“Help me out with something.” Julian glanced back at Madeline, still lying on the bed. “Find out who booked room 406 at the Royal Hotel, and check the security footage.”
“Checking out a hotel?” Josh perked up, clearly interested. It sounded like drama, and he hated missing out.
“Yeah.”
Tonight was not simple.
Earlier, he’d been too worried about Madeline to look into it, but remembering how sure Helene had seemed, he was starting to think there was more going on.
“Send me what you find. I’m hanging up.”
“Wait, don’t hang up! You didn’t say which hospital— Hello? Hello? Damn, he hung up fast.”
Josh handed Brady his phone.
Brady arched an eyebrow. “Why are you calling Madeline Julian’s wife again?”
Josh smirked. “He didn’t deny it, did he? Just a matter of time.”
“They fight every other day. You think it’s just a matter of time?” Brady shook his head. “It’s a miracle if they meet and don’t argue.”
“You don’t get it. Want to bet they’ll get together soon?”
“You’re one to talk. How soon is ‘soon’? A year? Two? Ten?”
Josh just took a sip of his drink, looking mysterious. “Take a guess.”
“Yeah, whatever.”
…
When the checkup was over, the doctor shot Julian a weird look.
Julian’s face darkened. “Is she seriously ill?”
“No, no.” The doctor hurried to reassure him. “She just has a fever and low blood sugar. It’s nothing serious.”
He’d seen how tense Julian was and thought Madeline was on death’s door.
“A fever? Low blood sugar?”
“Yep, nothing major. She just needs a little medicine for the fever and an IV. No need to worry so much.”
