The second her foot touched the ground, her legs buckled, and she almost fell.

Casey saw it happen. He swung out of the car and crossed over to catch her, steadying her by the arm. “You really think you’re okay like this?”

“I’m fine. I’m going home.” Madeline braced herself and headed toward the house.

“Madeline!”

That deep, chilly voice cut right through the air.

Madeline’s brow tightened.

Out of the corner of his eye, Casey caught sight of someone storming over with a lot of attitude. He just arched his brow and didn’t let go of Madeline’s arm. If anything, he pulled her a little closer.

Madeline turned to see Julian’s face. He looked furious, his eyes so dark and cold they almost glinted. He was coming fast.

Before Madeline could even say a word, Julian’s fist shot right at Casey.

The punch was loaded with anger, slicing past Madeline’s cheek with so much force that it honestly made her heart skip. She jerked in surprise. Casey let go of her, and she stumbled back a couple steps, just watching the drama play out.

Her brow twitched.

Casey ducked the punch, a hint of a smirk in his eyes as he shot Julian a look that was pure challenge.

“Back off,” Julian snapped, grabbing Madeline’s arm. At the same time, Casey grabbed her other hand.

Casey’s lips curled up in a cold smile. “And if I don’t?”

Madeline glanced up at both of them. They looked like they’d love nothing more than to beat each other into the ground.

She was tired. She yanked her arms free. “Hello? I’m a person, not a prop. Next time you guys want to grab me, maybe ask if I’m okay with it first?”

Both their hands fell away. Madeline took a step back. Now the two men were facing off on either side of her, neither one willing to back down.

Julian’s face could have frozen water, his eyes still burning with anger he hadn’t let out.

She had no clue what his problem was.

Madeline took a long breath. She remembered he swearing he’d never come looking for her again. He’d sounded so sure, like he meant it.

The thought didn’t get to finish. The world tilted and went black. She collapsed forward.
