Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 31

“Well…” The server hesitated, glancing at Madeline and Brenda. The people who dined here were all wealthy or important. No one had ever tried to skip out on the bill before.

He eyed Madeline and Brenda’s simple outfits, then looked over at Helene and her friends. Helene was a regular, and everyone on staff knew her. But Madeline was new, and with the way she dressed, the server just assumed she was with the wrong crowd.

“Ladies, I need you to pay the bill now. We don’t allow anyone to run a tab,” he said, as if he already knew they couldn’t afford it.

Brenda looked like she was about to explode, but Madeline gently held her back.

Raine smirked. “Didn’t you say you had money? Go ahead, pay up. Madeline, since you’re my sister, I can help you out. Maybe you should just beg me. It’s really not worth spending every last penny you have on one meal.”

Right after Raine finished talking, a sharply dressed man hurried over from the hallway.

The server quickly straightened up and nodded his head. “Manager.”

Raine’s expression shifted when she saw the manager. She looked at him and said, “Sorry. We didn’t mean to make a scene.”

She pulled a card from her purse and handed it to him. “Let me pay for my sister’s meal. We’re family, after all. I’d hate for her to end up humiliated over this.”

Raine held the card out like she was doing Madeline a big favor, her eyes full of superiority.

But the manager just gave her a strange look, walked right past her, and headed straight for Madeline.

Raine’s hand hung awkwardly in the air.

The manager stopped in front of Madeline and bowed his head politely. “Ms. Monroe, I’m so sorry. We had no idea you’d be joining us today. Please forgive us if we fell short in any way.”
