She couldn’t really explain why she agreed, but she had. After that, she never brought it up again. Now that she and Julian were divorced, there was no reason to mention it. The kidney she gave up… she decided to treat it as the price she paid for loving the wrong person.
Julian, I swear, I’ll never love you again.
Madeline leaned back in her seat, let out a quiet sigh, and closed her eyes.
…
“Bitch!” Helene had just come back from the hospital, her hand bandaged. Raine was the one who drove her home.
Helene stormed into the house, tossing her purse onto the floor, her face twisted with rage. Raine followed, trying to keep her distance.
“That bitch should’ve just died back then. I was too soft-hearted, that’s on me. I should’ve made sure she disappeared for good. None of this would be happening now.”
Helene started pacing the living room, her anger boiling over. Today was humiliating. Madeline had completely embarrassed her. Sure, Julian sided with her in the end, but he hadn’t done anything when Madeline hurt her right in front of him. He just let Madeline walk away.
Why? Why wouldn’t Julian do anything for her? Why didn’t he stop Madeline or at least punish her?
The more Helene thought about it, the angrier she got. She flipped the coffee table over, sending glass and knickknacks crashing to the floor.
Raine pressed her lips together and stepped closer. “Helene, calm down. She isn’t worth getting this worked up over.”
Raine sat beside her and let out a cold laugh. “Madeline just got lucky. After everything that happened five years ago, I can’t believe she’s still around.”
