It was almost a relief that Madeline had ruined herself. If that plagiarism scandal hadn’t happened, she’d probably be the brightest star in the perfume world by now.
Helene couldn’t stand the idea of Madeline reaching those heights.
She glanced at Raine. “Everything you’ve told me better be true. Since you’re so talented, prove it. If our perfume sales don’t beat Scent Trace next quarter, I don’t care what kind of trophies you have. You’re out of the head perfumer’s office. Fortner Group doesn’t keep people who can’t deliver. And just so you know, I’m getting really interested in Scent Trace’s head perfumer. What if I offer her double your salary to bring her over here? If that happens, do you really think there’ll be any place left for you, when you can’t even beat her?”
Helene had brought Raine in as the chief of her fragrance development team because she’d won the national competition. She thought she’d hired a winner.
Now, Helene was starting to wonder if she’d made a mistake.
Year after year, Raine kept getting outshined by some perfumer from a no-name company. Was Raine just not good enough, or was her rival that impressive?
Raine clenched her fists so tightly her nails dug into her palms. “I get it. I won’t let you down again.”
Inside, Raine was fuming. Who did that perfumer think she was, always outdoing her?
She’d tried to dig up info on that mysterious woman, but there was nothing. No matter how hard she searched, she came up empty.
Now, with Madeline in front and that mysterious perfumer lurking behind, Raine felt trapped. She was surrounded, and her only hope was to stay on Helene’s good side.
Forcing down her anger, Raine put on a flattering smile.
“Helene, I’m already working on a new fragrance formula. I promise, this time I won’t let you down. As for Madeline, she’s nothing compared to you. Your engagement to Mr. Grayson is coming up soon. Once you’re Mrs. Grayson, dealing with Madeline will be a piece of cake.”
Helene liked the sound of that.
