“The video of Ms. Fortner and Ms. Monroe’s fight at the restaurant is all over the internet. People are freaking out about it.”

Julian’s brows pulled together.

Miles had already checked the comments. Everyone could tell Helene’s fall was totally fake. The crowd online wasn’t holding back, piling on the sarcasm and jokes. Most people were laughing at Helene, and Julian, who’d stepped in to defend her and lashed out at Madeline, wasn’t spared either. The insults kept coming.

At the end of the video, someone had even added a little animation.

A cartoon clown threw himself into a ridiculous performance, acting out every move in an exaggerated, over-the-top way. Next to him, a pig watched, completely entranced. In the background, a crowd of people pointed and laughed, mocking the clown’s awful acting and the pig’s stupidness.

Then, with a pop of fireworks, the clown and the pig wound up together, and four bold words filled the screen: “Happily Ever After.”

Miles pressed his lips together and kept his eyes down. It was obvious who the pig and clown were meant to be.

That night, Helene and Julian were officially the joke of the entire city.

Miles set his phone down in front of Julian, his hands trembling. Julian watched the video, his face growing darker by the second. The air in the study felt heavy and cold, like it was closing in.

Julian’s brow tightened as he watched. A sharp pain raced through his head, as if something inside might snap. His tall frame wavered, and suddenly, he collapsed.

“Boss?”

“Julian! Call an ambulance, now!”

Madeline and Brenda had just finished a big dinner. Brenda picked up her phone, planning to scroll through some videos, when a trending story popped up. She clicked it, and within seconds, she was laughing so hard she nearly fell off the couch.

“Oh my God, Madeline, someone really did us a favor this time!”

“What happened?”

“Here, look at this.”

Madeline took Brenda’s phone and sat down next to her. When she saw the clown and the pig tangled up at the end of the video, she couldn’t help but chuckle.
