“It was me.”
“Oliver, you’re amazing! I absolutely love you. That’s exactly how to handle those two jerks.”
“By the way, how’s Mommy’s hand?” Oliver’s voice was full of worry.
“Don’t worry, it’s already taken care of. It’s just a small cut, it’ll heal soon,” Madeline said.
“And I’m here. I’ll make sure your mommy is alright.”
Oliver went quiet for a moment, then let out a long, worried sigh. “Mommy, please don’t do that again. They’re not worth you getting hurt. If you do it again, I’ll be really upset.”
Madeline pressed her lips together. Of course she hated pain, and she never wanted to go through something like that. But she knew Julian too well. He always meant what he said, and if she didn’t apologize or make some kind of sacrifice, he would never let her off the hook.
She couldn’t apologize. Not for something she didn’t do.
And she definitely wasn’t going to pay the price for something that wasn’t her fault.
If Julian insisted that someone had to pay for what happened to Helene, then Helene would have to get hurt by her own hand.
Madeline gave a bitter smile and promised Oliver she wouldn’t do it again.
Noticing the heavy mood in the room, Brenda jumped in to lighten things up. “Alright, let’s not talk about that anymore. Let’s talk about something happy.”
…
After waking up in the hospital, Julian went straight home.
He’d already had his people take down the video online, but everyone was still talking about it.
