Madeline shot upright, her back rigid with nerves. It felt like she’d just been caught sneaking around. When she looked up, Julian’s eyes were already on her, intense and unreadable.
Her heart skipped a beat. Maybe it was just guilt, but under that sharp gaze, she was sure he could see right through her. She took a steadying breath and forced herself to stay cool, determined not to show anything on her face.
Julian walked toward her, slow and deliberate. “What are you looking at?”
He kept coming closer. Madeline found herself stepping back until she bumped into the wall behind her. Julian narrowed his eyes, studying her.
She bit the inside of her cheek, trying to sound casual. “Just bored from waiting. I was looking around.”
His eyes glinted, cold and a little suspicious, but he didn’t press. “Alright.”
Madeline let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding and patted her chest, silently celebrating. Thank goodness he wasn’t sharp enough to notice anything strange.
Julian dropped onto the sofa. When he noticed she was still standing there, he shot her a look. “Do I need to roll out a red carpet for you?”
Madeline almost rolled her eyes. She walked over and took the needle kit from the medical box. Julian watched her, face unreadable. “When did you learn alternative medicine?”
Her hands paused for just a second. The corner of her mouth twitched with a cold, almost mocking smile. She was his wife for 5 years and he never even knew what she studied in college. She’d majored in alternative medicine, but after marrying him, she’d given up her career plans to stay home, take care of him, maybe have a couple of kids, and be the devoted wife she thought he wanted. Now, looking back, she wanted to shake some sense into her old self. Giving up her dreams for a man was so ridiculous.
“Guess I was just born with it,” she replied, her voice flat.
