When Miles finally spotted Oliver, the boy was just sitting under a streetlight, nibbling on a blade of grass, his chin resting in his palm. He looked so calm, like he’d been waiting for them the whole time.

“Noah,” Miles called out, breathless as he and the others hurried over. “What are you doing here? We’ve been worried sick. Let’s go home, okay?”

Oliver stood up and looked at him, recognizing Miles instantly. He knew this was his grumpy dad’s assistant.

“Miles, I didn’t go far. I was right here waiting for you. You guys were just too slow. I turned around and—poof—you were all gone.”

Behind Miles, the two bodyguards who were supposed to be watching Oliver hung their heads, looking totally embarrassed.

Miles let out a long sigh and crouched down in front of Oliver, his face tense. “Noah, Mr. Grayson is really upset that you wandered off on your own today. We should head back before he gets any angrier.”

Oliver hesitated, chewing on his lip. “Is it really that bad when bad... when Daddy gets mad?”

Miles thought about the look on Julian’s face earlier and nodded, swallowing hard. “Yeah… it’s kind of scary sometimes. But he really loves you. If you apologize, I’m sure he’ll calm down.”

Oliver remembered his brother telling him their dad wasn’t easy to deal with. He glanced around and noticed a little cake shop across the street. “Miles, can I get a little cake for Daddy?”

“A cake? But Noah, Mr. Grayson doesn’t eat sweets.”

“He doesn’t?” Oliver pouted, looking confused. “But sweets make people happy. Daddy’s always in a bad mood. Maybe he’s just upset because he never has any cake.”

Miles gave a helpless smile. He wanted to say that Julian’s temper was just… well, Julian’s temper.

“You wait here. I’ll go buy it myself. Don’t worry, I won’t get lost,” Oliver declared.

Miles shook his head. “No, I’ll come with you.” He wasn’t about to risk losing this kid again.
