Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 62

Oliver wiped his tears, his lips quivering as he mumbled, “Aunt Helene was just being honest with me. She’s the nicest person I’ve ever known, not mean at all. I should be the one thinking about why I keep making things awkward in this house.”

Julian’s face grew even more tense. “Did you teach him to say that?”

“I… I didn’t…” Helene’s voice shook as she looked at Julian, realizing Oliver had completely outmaneuvered her. Helpless, she glanced at Marian, silently begging for backup.

Marian jumped in right away. “Sir, honestly, it really was Noah’s fault this time. Ms. Fortner’s been more than patient with him.”

Julian’s cold eyes slid over to Marian. “You always know how to defend her, don’t you?”

Marian hesitated, her voice barely more than a whisper. “I’m just telling it like it is, sir.”

Julian turned his gaze to Helene.

She clutched her chest, crying so hard her face was streaked with tears, looking completely heartbroken.

“Why did you pull out the flowers?” Julian asked, his voice softer now as he looked down at the little boy in his arms.

“You promised to build me a playground there, remember? But then you gave it to Aunt Helene…” Oliver lowered his head, his voice small and wounded.

Julian frowned, remembering. Back then, he’d noticed how down Oliver seemed and wanted to build him a little play area at home. But then Helene had asked if she could plant flowers there and he’d agreed, not thinking much of it.

Now he realized he’d messed up. A promise was a promise. He shouldn’t have changed his mind so easily.

“You’re right. It’s my fault this time.” Julian ruffled Oliver’s hair gently. “I’ll do better. It won’t happen again.”

“Really? Does that mean I can still have my playground?” Oliver’s eyes lit up.

“Yeah, you can.”

Snuggled in Julian’s arms, Oliver couldn’t help sneaking a peek at Helene. He stuck out his tongue at her, silently mouthing, “Boo-hoo.”

Helene’s eyes flew wide open. “You little— Julian, he’s faking it!”

But when Julian looked down, Oliver’s face was all innocent misery. He looked scared and sad, still rubbing his red eyes with his little hands.

Helene was stunned. Since when did that brat Noah get so sneaky?
