That night, he tried to dig up the truth about the man Madeline had been with, but came up empty-handed.
Julian’s eyes clouded over, his mood taking a turn for the worse.
“So, if you knew, why did you still help me?” Oliver looked up at him, searching for answers.
Julian arched a brow, his tone casual but hiding something deeper. “Because it was kind of true, and kind of not.”
There was no way a kid could come up with those words on his own. Someone must have planted them. He'd made it very clear no one in the house was to bring it up. The only exception was Helene, who always did as she pleased.
He’d adopted Noah years ago, which meant Noah was his son. And as Julian’s son, nobody was allowed to pick on him.
“Listen to me. If anyone ever says stuff like that to you again, ignore them. You’re my kid. You’ll always be my kid. This is your home, always.”
Oliver stared at him. His usually scary dad suddenly seemed a lot softer, the edge in his eyes replaced with something warmer.
“Really? So… if someone bullies me again, will you protect me like you did today?”
Julian ruffled Oliver’s hair, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Of course.”
Feeling the gentle pressure of Julian’s hand, Oliver thought maybe his dad wasn’t so bad after all.
“Alright, enough standing around. Finish your dinner and head to bed early. I heard from the staff you’ve been staring at a screen all day. It’s not good for your eyes.”
“I wasn’t on the computer all day. I did a bunch of things.”
“Like what?”
“Well, I chased off an old witch, for one.”
Julian just stared at him, speechless.
After dinner, Oliver went back to his room, powered up his computer, and waited for Noah to come online. He could barely hold back his excitement, wanting to brag about today’s victory.
…
Julian was alone in his study when Miles walked in, holding a sealed envelope.
“Sir, the DNA test results are here.”
Julian took the report, his grip tightening just a little. He hesitated, then flipped to the last page.
No biological relation.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint flickering there. His face stayed unreadable, but his chest felt tight, like something was stuck there.
