She was always on edge around Madeline, never able to let her guard down. And at work, her own team just couldn’t seem to get anything right.
Helene tried to calm herself with a few deep breaths, but the anger inside her refused to settle. Her phone started to ring. She snatched it up, voice sharp and impatient. “What is it?”
“Helene, are you busy?” The voice belonged to Lucy, Julian’s mother.
Immediately, Helene’s whole attitude changed. “Oh, Mrs. Grayson, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize it was you.”
“It’s alright. I heard you and Julian had a fight last night. Was it because of that child?”
At the mention of last night, Helene’s voice softened, almost trembling. “It was my fault..."
“That’s enough. The housekeeper already told me everything. It wasn’t your fault. Julian, honestly, I can’t believe him… You two are about to get engaged and he still doesn’t know how to handle things. I asked him to take me shopping at lunch. You should come too. You two care about each other. Whatever happened, just talk it out.”
Helene felt a wave of relief, almost tearing up. “Thank you. Really.”
“You’re going to be my daughter-in-law. Of course I’m on your side. As for that bastard, he should be grateful he could stay by Julian’s side for so long. He turned out so rude and disrespectful. Just like his mother.”
Helene couldn’t help but smile a little. “Lucy, actually Noah…”
“You don’t need to defend him. I know what kind of person he is. If you two can’t deal with that child, then I’ll do it myself.”
Lucy’s voice was icy, making it clear she meant every word.
