"Alright, let's head inside." Lucy gave Helene a reassuring look, letting her know there was no need to be nervous around Julian. She encouraged her to get a little closer to him.
Helene bit her lip, then slipped her hand through Julian's arm and spoke softly. "Julian, it was my fault before. I know I went a bit overboard last night. When we get back, I’ll apologize to Noah myself, okay?"
Julian glanced at her, his eyes cold. His voice was low and calm, almost indifferent. "You don’t need to."
He walked on ahead, leaving Helene’s hand hanging in the air. She watched him move forward without waiting for her, her smile almost slipping away.
"Julian," Lucy called, clearly annoyed by his attitude.
Helene turned to Lucy, shaking her head with a patient, slightly hurt look. "It’s okay, Lucy."
Lucy let out a sigh. "You don’t deserve this."
"I’m really fine."
Helene pushed Lucy’s wheelchair and hurried to catch up with Julian. By the time she matched his pace, her face had already put on another sweet, eager smile.
All of Noah’s school supplies had always been bought for him by Julian’s people. This was the first time he got to go shopping for them himself, with his mom by his side.
Noah was bouncing with excitement. The three of them carefully picked out everything he needed at the stationery store, making sure not to miss a thing.
Afterwards, Madeline decided to get him some new clothes. He had gotten a bit thinner lately, and the outfits from back in Country Y were starting to look too baggy on him.
Soon, they walked out of the children’s clothing store, arms full of bags. All three of them looked completely satisfied.
Noah thought nothing beat hanging out with his mom.
Brenda linked arms with Madeline as they walked and chatted. "Madeline, now that Julian won’t let you treat him, what about the child?"
The question made Madeline’s heart sink. "I’ll just have to think of another way."
