“Wait,” Lucy snapped. “Get my future daughter-in-law the same dress she’s wearing. If Madeline can have it, then so can Helene.”

Helene just wanted out, so she went along with Lucy’s demand, turning to a sales associate. “Could you find one in my size, please?”

“Julian, you pay for it,” Lucy instructed, making it clear she was backing Helene up today.

Helene shot her a grateful look.

But the sales associate looked apologetic. “I’m so sorry, but this dress is a one-of-a-kind piece. Each size only has one, and the one in your size is already being worn by this lady.”

Lucy’s expression turned icy. “Just because she’s wearing it doesn’t mean she’s buying it. If she’s not, she should take it off right now and give it to Helene.”

Helene glanced at Julian. She did really want the dress, but now she was even more curious to see if Julian would side with her or Madeline. She stepped closer and looked at Madeline.

“Ms. Monroe, are you sure you want this dress? I like it a lot. If you don’t, would you let me have it? I’m happy to exchange it for any other dress you want from the store. You can pick whichever one you like.”

There was a clear challenge in Helene’s eyes.
