Noah’s smartwatch started ringing again. It was their mom calling.

Madeline came home and didn’t see a single soul in the house.

Noah took off his watch and handed it to Oliver. Oliver answered right away, all smiles. “Mommy!”

“Oliver, you barely know your way around here. Where did you run off to now?”

Oliver’s brain kicked into high gear. “Mommy, you weren’t back yet and I was bored, so I went out to play for a bit. I’ll be home soon, don’t worry.”

Madeline almost laughed out of pure frustration. How was she supposed to deal with a son who couldn’t sit still?

“Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”

“No, no, I can get back on my own. I’m fine, Mommy. I have to go now.”

Afraid she’d keep asking questions, Oliver hurriedly ended the call.

“How’d it go? Did she buy it?” Noah asked.

“I think so.”

“I’m going downstairs to check things out.”

Noah slipped out and came back a few minutes later. “Let’s go.”

“Okay.”

The two boys hunched over and scurried downstairs. In the living room, Julian and Helene were focused on the family doctor, who was examining Lucy. No one was paying them any attention.

Taking the chance, Noah quietly led Oliver to the backyard. There was a gate in the back. Noah opened it and looked at Oliver. “Can you make it home by yourself?”

Oliver nodded confidently. “Don’t worry, I got this.”

“Alright, head home first. We can talk later.”

“Okay, bye, Noah.”

Noah watched Oliver rush off, feeling a wave of loneliness wash over him.

If their parents were together, maybe they wouldn’t have to sneak around and keep getting separated like this.

Noah let out a quiet sigh and shut the gate.

When he came back inside, the adults in the living room finally noticed him.

He had no idea what they’d been discussing, but he saw his dad storm upstairs, clearly furious.

And his so-called grandmother shot him a sharp, cold look.

Noah knew that, except for his dad, nobody in this house really liked him. He’d stopped hoping for kindness from anyone else a long time ago.

He acted like he didn’t notice anything and followed his dad upstairs.
