When Oliver woke up for school tomorrow and if Julian saw him here, things would get really messy.
Madeline grabbed her phone and answered. Helene’s voice burst out, anxious and sharp. “Julian, where are you? Your mother and I have been waiting for you all night.”
Madeline’s reply was cold. “He fainted. He’s at my place. You can come pick him up later.”
There was a pause. “Who is this? Madeline?”
Helene’s voice jumped an octave, shrill and furious. Madeline could practically see her fuming on the other end.
She held the phone away, but Helene’s screech was still loud enough to make her wince.
“Why is Julian with you? Did you seduce him?”
Madeline’s patience snapped. “Are you even listening? He came to my place on his own and passed out here. He came. To my place. Got it?”
“That’s because you tempted him! Why else would he go to your apartment?”
Madeline almost laughed in disbelief. She opened her mouth, but Helene cut her off, her voice wild with jealousy.
“You just can’t let go, can you? Still trying to get close to Julian! You want to ruin my happiness. Madeline, you bitch, where are you? Give me your address, right now!”
Talking to her was pointless.
Madeline took a breath, ignored Helene’s shouting, and hung up.
Helene’s panicked yelling echoed through the phone. “Madeline! Hello? Madeline!”
Lucy, who had been watching, jumped in right away. “What happened? I thought you were calling Julian. Why are you yelling Madeline’s name?”
Helene wiped at her eyes, all red and watery. “Mrs. Grayson, I called Julian, but Madeline picked up. She said Julian is at her place. Is she trying to show off? Is she planning to steal Julian from me again?”
Lucy’s face turned stormy. “That bitch is nothing but trouble.”
