Madeline tried her best to tune out Julian, but whoever was at the door wasn’t giving up. The knocking just kept going. She rolled over, yanked her pillow over her head, but it didn’t do much to block the sound. With a groan, she tossed the pillow aside and gave in.
She got up, marched toward the door, and swung it open. Julian, who’d been passed out earlier, was now awake. The older woman and the paramedics hadn’t left either.
Julian looked like hell. He was pale and shaky, his eyes rimmed red, and he fixed Madeline with a cold stare.
The older lady jumped right in, sounding anxious. “Come on. That’s enough drama for one night. Your boyfriend’s really weak and he won’t go to the hospital. Can you please talk to him?”
Madeline took a slow breath. “He’s not my boyfriend.”
The lady blinked, glancing between Madeline and Julian, clearly lost about whatever was going on between them.
Madeline let out a sigh. It was late, and it wasn’t fair to keep these people waiting around.
With no other choice, she stepped forward and reached for Julian, helping him to his feet. She looked at the group and gave a tired smile. “Sorry for all the trouble. I’ll take it from here. He’s my headache now.”
One of the paramedics looked uncertain. “Are you sure he doesn’t need to go to the hospital?”
Julian spoke up, his voice rough and quiet. “I’m fine.”
A hospital wouldn’t change anything. No matter how many times he went, it wouldn’t solve the real problem.
He shot Madeline a frosty glance, his gaze sharp and accusing.
She rolled her eyes at him.
The paramedics had already checked him over and said it was just exhaustion. Since he was awake and still refusing help, there wasn’t much more they could do. After a few last instructions, everyone finally left.
When they were alone, Madeline stared at Julian, totally exasperated, then grudgingly helped him back inside.
She more or less dumped him onto the sofa. Planting her hands on her hips, she glared at him, breathing hard. “So, tough guy, I thought you didn’t need my help. What, changed your mind now?”
