Twin Cupids at Work: Daddy, Come Home! novel Chapter 93

Julian was never what anyone would call kind. If anything, he was pure trouble. Helene hovered behind him, too scared to say a word. She kept her eyes on the floor, muttering in her head about how stupid the maid was.

The maid kept bawling, her cries echoing through the room, until the two bodyguards outside rushed in. They grabbed her by the arms and dragged her away. As they passed Helene, the maid clung to her sleeve, desperate for help. Helene clenched her jaw and slid quietly out of reach.

Out in the hallway, Madeline waited for her chance. As soon as the bodyguards opened the door, she slipped closer, catching a quick glimpse inside. For a split second, someone blocked her view, but she caught sight of the child lying in the hospital bed. She couldn't see his face clearly, just the shape of it, but it was enough to spark a memory. It’s the boy from the airport. The more she saw, the more sure she became. Her gut was right. That boy looked just like Oliver. He had to be her son. She just needed to find a way to be sure.

Inside, Julian wiped the blood off his hands, then poured Noah a glass of water. He held it up and made sure Noah drank. The little guy had a bandage on the back of his head, and he looked even paler than usual, all the color gone from his cheeks. It made him seem so small, so breakable.

“Daddy…” Noah’s voice was rough, barely more than a whisper.

Julian’s eyes softened just a little. “How did you hurt your head?”

Before Noah could say a word, Helene jumped in. “Julian, it was my fault. Noah bit my hand, and I pushed him away without thinking. He lost his balance and hit his head. I’m so sorry, it was all me.”

Julian didn’t turn around, so Helene couldn’t see his reaction. She kept on, her voice trembling just enough. “I wanted to take him to the hospital right away, but he ran off before I could get to him. Then I got worried about you, so I sent the maid to look for him while I went after you.”
