Her eyes landed on Enoch, watching this man who, despite being confined to a wheelchair, was undeniably handsome. And he had that kind of shimmer about him, as if he was glowing.
When Blythe saw Enoch and Drusilla return, she said, “Let me introduce Verena Garner to you.”
She had already mentioned Verena and the kids’ situation to Enoch over the phone earlier today. Considering Drusilla’s feelings, she chose not to delve into the details in front of her.
Enoch glanced at Verena, thinking, “So this is the woman who’s been using her kids to cozy up my mother so as to marry me?”
Ridiculous!
He was curious to see how she'd play her hand.
Verena smiled and said to him, “Nice to meet you, Mr. Taylor.”
Enoch, with a stone-faced expression, ignored her greeting.
Drusilla, puzzled, took a seat next to them, looking at Verena, wanting to ask what she was up to, but Verena didn’t even glance her way but had her gaze fixed on Enoch.
Enoch, not one for many words, simply ignored Verena and focused on serving Drusilla some food, “Let’s eat.”
Drusilla was baffled, wondering what got into him. Since when did he start to be a good man serving her food?
Eating apprehensively, she didn’t dare ask. Seizing the moment, she texted Verena: [What are you doing?]
[Nothing. Just wanted to see what your husband looks like.]
Verena texted back.
Drusilla felt a throbbing headache coming on. She put down her phone since she was worried about being figured out by the Taylor family, and looked at Enoch.
Blythe asked, “Enoch, do you know Ms. Garner from before?”
Enoch looked at Verena and said, “I have no acquaintance with such a con artist.”
Though it was all an act, she couldn’t help but pause, realizing it had been ages since she'd been this close to a man.
Seeing Enoch so protective of Drusilla, Verena actually thought, aside from his disability, he was perfect in every other aspect. Maybe marrying Drusilla off to him wasn’t such a bad idea after all!
She lowered her head, texting Drusilla: [Not bad. The guy is quite something.]
Drusilla massaged her temples and was at a loss for words. They didn’t know she and Enoch both pretending, and only she was painfully aware.
Worried she might slip up, she quickly texted Verena: [Verena, stop it. What are you trying to do?]
Verena didn’t reply but looked up at Enoch again, saying, “But I heard your wife is divorced, with two kids. You’re not at all concerned that you’re not well-matched or from similar backgrounds, Mr. Taylor?”
Even though she usually couldn’t stand speaking ill of Drusilla, Verena was curious about Enoch’s reaction.
Enoch laughed, “What my wife does is nobody else’s business. So what if she’s divorced? It just means she had the misfortune of meeting a jerk before. And her having two kids? I love her, and her children are mine too!”
