Cybele said, “Oh, by the way, the old man has been looking for you. I thought you wouldn’t be back till the afternoon. But since you’re here, you might as well drop by.”
Drusilla nodded. She didn’t have anything better to do, so she decided to pay Wendell a visit.
…
Wendell greeted her with a smile, “Odette.”
He was sitting in front of a chessboard, playing solitaire chess.
Drusilla took a seat and said, “How many times do I have to tell you, sir? My name is Drusilla.”
“Alright, Drusilla.” Wendell said, “Where have you been? You missed dinner.”
“Just had some errands to run.” Drusilla picked up a chess piece and started playing with him.
Wendell initially remembered her as Drusilla, but after a while, he reverted to calling her Odette again.
Halfway through the game, Enoch arrived, accompanied by Oberon. His wheelchair came to a stop next to her, and he watched her make her move.
Enoch’s presence reminded Drusilla of the conversation she had with Blythe in the car on their way back. Enoch probably didn’t know about it, right?
She hoped not.
She wanted to take her chances, but the next second, she heard Enoch asking, “I heard you came back with my mom?”
Drusilla tried to keep a straight face and answered with a sense of gravity, “Yeah, we bumped into each other at the mall and decided to head back together.”
“Did you upset her?” Enoch eyed her delicate face. She looked somewhat innocent.
He knew his mother’s easygoing nature, so how did Drusilla manage that?
Feigning ignorance, Drusilla looked at Enoch as if she had no clue, “She’s upset? Really?”
Oberon said no more, but the game ended soon after. He stood by, giving Drusilla a ‘shall we?’ look.
Drusilla reluctantly stood up, facing Wendell with a resolve, “I need to see Enoch now.”
“Go ahead.” Wendell responded.
Drusilla left Wendell and made her way to Enoch’s study. Enoch was sitting behind his desk, looking at her as she entered, “Take a seat.”
Drusilla sat down, noticing a glass of water in front of her. She took a sip, trying to appear calm, “Did you need something? I was in the middle of a game with your grandpa.”
She tried her best to seem preoccupied.
Enoch had a book in front of him. He flipped it open, glanced at it, and only then did he say, “Did you tell my mom that I told you that you’d be my only darling?”
The words were her own, but hearing Enoch echo them made Drusilla squirm uncomfortably.
