Enoch's gaze settled on her, "Please, Dr. Lawson, go ahead."
Thanks to her acupuncture session yesterday, his leg was finally starting to feel something again. Because of that, he found himself treating her with a bit more courtesy than usual.
Drusilla said, "I'm here to implore you to spare my family, the Lawsons. My dad's getting on in years, and the company has been his life's work. I hope you could find it in your heart to let this go."
Enoch glanced at Oberon, then back at Drusilla, "Your dad?"
He almost didn't catch her drift.
Oberon clarified, "Dr. Lawson is Leander's daughter, and... Odette's sister."
"Is that so?" Enoch looked at Drusilla with a hint of surprise, "You don't look anything like her."
He never had much affection for Odette.
The only reason he agreed to the engagement in the first place was because it was arranged by his grandfather.
He had always been close to his grandfather, who had asked him to fulfill this promise in memory of an old war buddy of his, so he had agreed.
To put it mildly, Odette was far from what he had hoped for in a partner.
But since it was a marriage devoid of emotion, he didn't really care and so tolerated her presence.
However, she had just run off after his accident, which made him the laughingstock of the town and caused his grandfather so much distress that he ended up in the hospital.
That was something he couldn't just let slide.
Drusilla continued, "Oberon was right. I'm Leander's daughter. My dad is in the hospital right now, and he really can't handle any more stress. So... I'm hoping you could just let my family be."
"That's right," Enoch replied, "I'm the kind of person who holds grudges. Whatever Odette has done, you can't make amends for it.
"I don't believe you could understand from my perspective, of what it's like to be abandoned by your partner when you're in trouble. If you can't even rely on the person you were supposed to marry, then tell me, who can you trust in this world?"
Drusilla was taken aback by his words, not expecting such a candid response from Enoch.
She couldn't help but smile.
Enoch saw her expression, "What's so funny?"
"I'm just amused at how naive you are. You expected Odette to be reliable even before you were married? In this world, even those who are married can let you down, let alone a fiancée."
As she spoke, her mind drifted to Harlan. Three years of dating, three years of marriage, and it took all that time for her to see him clearly...
