"So, are you going to do it or not?" Harlan peered at her, visibly losing his patience.
"No, I won't." Drusilla replied, "I'm not as heartless as you are. You know how hard it was for me to conceive these twins, right?"
Her attachment to the unborn twins was undeniable; she couldn't possibly consider terminating the pregnancy, especially after today’s visit to the doctor, where she saw how well the twins were developing. The thought of ending their lives now seemed unimaginably cruel.
"Well, fine. If you want to go through with this, you're on your own. And if you're really set on having these kids, you better be ready to raise them yourself because we're getting a divorce," Harlan stated coldly.
"What did you say?" Drusilla was taken aback. She never imagined 'divorce' would be a word he'd utter.
She had always thought Harlan treated her well, and she was willing to put up with a lot because of that. But now, to hear him suggest such a thing...
"I'm not joking," Harlan continued. "Why should I take care of kids that aren't mine?"
With that, he turned on his heel, slammed the door, and secluded himself in the bedroom.
Left alone in the living room, Drusilla felt the chill of the air conditioning deep in her bones.
Later, her mother-in-law, Saskia, called her. "Darling."
"Mom," Drusilla responded, realizing only then that she had been crying. She couldn't even remember the last time she had shed tears.
She quickly wiped her eyes, hoping Saskia wouldn't notice anything amiss.
Over the phone, Saskia inquired, "Harlan just told me he is considering an abortion. Why?"
"You should ask him. I don't know."
After a stream of accusations, Saskia hung up.
...
When Drusilla woke up, she found herself in a hospital.
Outside, she could hear Saskia's voice, as harsh as it was over the phone. "Your daughter has the nerve to do something like this, and you still want to talk about marriage? Your Lawson family sure has some nerve! My son treated her like a queen, and she repays him by cheating? The nerve of some people."
Opening her eyes, Drusilla saw her father, Leander Lawson, sitting beside her. Tears started to fall again as she looked at him. "Dad."
The weight of her situation felt too heavy to bear.
Leander, his face devoid of any smile, asked, "Whose child is it?"
