She was just stepping out to use the restroom when she spotted Drusilla and Harlan together. Hurrying over, she confronted Drusilla with a wary look. "Are you here bothering Harlan again? Have you no shame? After what you did, how dare you show your face around Harlan?"
Harlan was caught off guard by his mother's sudden appearance. "Mom, what are you doing here?"
"What am I doing here?" Saskia shot him a look. "And what are you doing? Why are you being so polite to her? You two are divorced, so stay away from her. Don't let her sweet-talk you into anything. I'm telling you, women like her deserve to be shamed, to never hold their heads up high again!"
Despite Harlan now being married to Lilith, Saskia had not forgiven Drusilla for her past infidelity. Every encounter with Drusilla was a chance for Saskia to unleash her fury.
Even at her workplace, Saskia would publicly berate her without mercy, attracting onlookers as was happening now. Saskia's loud confrontation was drawing unwanted attention from passersby.
"Mom, please, don't do this. Just go about your business," Harlan pleaded.
Lilith was still around! If this blew up, she would find out about his and Drusilla's past.
Now that Drusilla was part of the Taylor family, Harlan worried about what Lilith would think seeing Drusilla every day.
Although he wished Drusilla would leave the Taylor family, he didn't want it to come at his own expense.
Saskia, seeing Harlan's reluctance, grew anxious on his behalf. "What are you afraid of? Why are you so polite to her? She cheated on you, and you're still protecting her? I'm telling you, Harlan, you're married to Lilith now. Stay away from this woman, got it? Don't go soft the moment she says a few words."
Saskia continued, "Pity, after leaving my son, her lover didn't want her either. Look at what she's become! Hilarious! Now that my son's doing well, she wants to crawl back for forgiveness? Dream on!"
Drusilla stood aside, feeling the weight of those curious, judgmental stares on her.
This scene was all too familiar to her. Any encounter with Saskia over the years meant trouble, a threat to her livelihood, a target for public scorn. She had tried to explain her side, but no one seemed willing to listen.
In that moment, she felt a chill, as if transported back to those darkest days after childbirth, abandoned and utterly despairing.
Drusilla looked at Harlan, standing there, oblivious to the struggles she had faced because of their past.
