Drusilla found herself momentarily frozen at the doorway, caught under the intense gaze of Mr. Taylor.
"What's your last name?" he inquired, his voice deep and commanding, yet undeniably magnetic.
Feeling it rude to keep staring, Drusilla quickly averted her gaze, replying, "Lawson. Here's my business card."
"Dr. Lawson, you may start now,” Enoch Taylor said, taking the card without so much as a glance and speaking with an air of indifference.
Drusilla took a deep breath and began setting up her equipment. She hadn’t always been a physical therapist specializing in alternative treatments like acupuncture. It all started when she was pregnant with her twin boys, Colton and Cormac. Wanting to stay home with them, she left her job and began learning the craft from Verena's friend’s grandfather, Gable, initially just helping out. Soon, Gable, a respected figure in the field, noticed her talent and took her under his wing, passing on his extensive knowledge.
These days, Gable was taking fewer clients due to his advancing age, leaving Drusilla to carry on his legacy. Despite her experience, today's session with Mr. Taylor had her unusually nervous, especially with his assistant, Oberon, watching her every move as if she might harm Mr. Taylor.
Thankfully, the session ended without incident, and Drusilla let out a sigh of relief.
"Acupuncture works best in thirty-minute sessions. I'll return this evening for another round. I noticed Mr. Taylor's muscles were quite tense, likely a remnant from a past car accident. With a week's treatment, there should be noticeable improvement," she explained as she started to pack up.
"Improvement?" Oberon sounded skeptical, eyeing Drusilla as if doubting her expertise. "Are you saying Mr. Taylor's condition could actually improve?"
Drusilla was taken aback. "Isn't that why you called me here, to aid in his recovery?"
Upon hearing her words, Oberon's face lit up with a trace of joy. He glanced incredulously at Mr. Taylor, then turned back to Drusilla and said, "If you can truly improve Mr. Taylor’s condition, we'd be immensely grateful."
It was Drusilla's first visit to the Taylor family's residence, and she wasn't very familiar with the place. The driver had initially stopped at the back door, but now Cybele was guiding her out through the front door.
As they entered the courtyard, Drusilla spotted a couple approaching from outside. To her surprise, it was her ex-husband, Harlan, accompanied by his new wife, Lilith. Harlan was carrying Lilith's purse, their hands intertwined, presenting a picture of marital bliss.
Although Drusilla was already thoroughly disappointed with this man, she couldn’t help but find the sight ironic.
Now, her only regret was not being able to secure the house when she divorced him.
Back then, recovering from childbirth and overwhelmed, she lacked the strength to fight. Harlan had hidden all evidence of the artificial insemination, causing Drusilla's claims of his dishonesty to fall on disbelieving ears among her own family.
