His words made me smile despite everything. Even though Alexander and I came from very different backgrounds and we seemed to want completely separate things from life–Alexander seemed to want a family and I just wanted to find myself after losing my identity in my first marriage. I knew that Alexander was being serious. The fact that he actually has considered marrying me made my heart lift, and I flushed with hot pleasure.

Thankfully, traffic started to move again, and Alexander had to focus on the road so that I could be alone with my thoughts.

When we returned to the office, it was already close to the end of the work day. When I ran into Gai after we stepped off of the elevator, my cheeks grew warm since I had been gone most of the afternoon. Before I could even begin to make up excuses, Gai lifted her hand to stop me.

“Don’t worry about it,” she said and smiled. “I told everyone that you and Alexander went to an important work meeting for the afternoon.”

I sighed with relief. “Thank you so much.”

Her covering for us deeply moved me. I vowed to have Mike bring her breakfast from now on.

The next few days went by fast. Alexander drove me to the physical therapist every day after work so that Jacob could apply the medicine. My ankle injury eventually healed, and after using some exercises that Jacob had taught me, I could finally ditch my annoying crutches and walk on my

own.

for my medicine to dry, he played chess and talked with Jacob. After a few days, Jacob took me aside and said that he definitely approved of Alexander.

His comment made satisfaction surge through me. But Alexander seemed to take advantage of the fact that Jacob approved of him. I noticed that he began to ask my physical therapist seemingly random questions about my father, DeAngelo.

One day, he even got Jacob to reveal that my father had purchased expensive orchids and even hid it from my mother–something that even I hadn’t been aware of. Why would my father ever do that? What did he have to hide?

Throughout her workday on Friday, Olivia did her best not to think about what Jacob had revealed about her father buying expensive flowers that her mother didn’t know about.

She hoped that it was for a surprise for her mother, but it wasn’t like their anniversary was coming up. She didn’t want to think that her father could be cheating on her mother. All of her life, she knew that her parents loved each other. Of course, they didn’t have the perfect marriage, but that didn’t really exist.

She spent Friday night alone in a warm bath, trying to read a book. Olivia had created a calming atmosphere because after the crazy weekend she had, she just wanted a relaxing night. She had lit a vanilla–scented candle, put on an instrumental smooth jazz playlist, and turned the lights down low.

But the more she tried to relax, the more the knot in the back of her neck tightened. She couldn’t stop thinking about the flowers that her father had bought. How was she going to act normal around her dad this weekend when dark thoughts about him cheating were bouncing around her head?
